The
Cultural Center of Barroco na Bahia, located in the neighborhood
of Saúde in Salvador (next to the Historic Center), was
the residence of the famous founder of the newspaper “A
Tarde”, Dr. Ernesto Simões Filho. The beautiful house was
constructed at the end of the 19th century and the beginning
of the 20th century.
The
home has a Portuguese tile facade, and shell and stone mosaics. The
residence is now protected as a historical monument by the
government. The daughter of the original owner, D. Regina
de Mello Leitão, donated the house to the Archdiocese of Salvador
for use as a cultural center.
In
1995 the Archbishop Primate of Brazil, Dom Lucas Cardeal Moreira
Neves, allowed the house to be used for the cultural activities
of the Barroco na Bahia project. Under
the direction of Hans Bönisch, during 1995 and 1996, the large
house, with support from the German government, was completely
restored by the European Center of Restoration (Schloss Raesfeld)
of Germany. The Barroco na Bahia cultural center can
be rented for birthday parties, receptions, and other social
events. For more information contact us by phone + 55
